Guidelines for Medical Student Curriculum

SGR GUIDELINES FOR GASTROINTESTINAL RADIOLOGY
IN THE MEDICAL SCHOOL CURRICULUM

In response to a request from the Alliance of Medical Student Educators in Radiology (AMSER) to provide guidelines for a general radiology curriculum in medical school, a committee of the SGR was formed to consider the important areas of GI radiology that medical students should be exposed to during medical school training. This committee was chaired by Dr. Henry Goldberg, with committee members Dr. Ruedi Thoeni, Dr. Marc Levine and Dr. Cheri Canon. This first set of guidelines was approved by the Board of the SGR in April 2002. These guidelines will be integrated with others from different subspecialty areas in radiology by AMSER so that a comprehensive set of guidelines can be made available to curriculum committees in medical schools. When viewing these guidelines, remember that they are not intended to cover all of GI radiology and they are not intended to be the same as a radiology resident curriculum. They are directed specifically to medical students. They are only guidelines. Each institution will have its own modifications to suit its particular curriculum. The guidelines will be updated and revised in context with the AMSER evaluations from all other subspecialty areas. This is expected to happen in the next year or two.
